I'm April Giancola, Director of Public Interest Advising, and I want to introduce you to the various programs that support students pursuing a career in public service. Historically, 15-20% of our graduating classes pursue public service employment.

Build a Public Service Career

  • The Career Development Office offers a range of public interest-related career programming and has counselors on staff who specialize in working with students interested in public interest and government careers and summer opportunities.
  • The Public Interest Peer Mentor Program pairs 1L students with 2L or 3L students with similar public service interests.
    • Mentors meet with their mentees on an individual basis throughout the year and serve as a resource to help with the transition to law school, share experiences, and answer questions about public interest careers.
    • Group social activities this academic year include a chili dinner, panel of public interest attorneys, and spring picnic.
  • The Public Defender Mentor Project provides law students interested in public defense with a source of information and support, an established link to relevant faculty, and a means of identifying other students with similar interests and aspirations.
  • The 3L Public Interest Job Search Group brings together third-year students in small group sessions to provide specialized programming and peer-to-peer job search support.
  • UNC Law offers financial assistance and resources for students pursuing careers in public service, including grants for unpaid summer employment and post-graduate loan repayment assistance.
  • Our annual Public Interest Retreat provides networking opportunities and career exploration with fellow students and local attorneys in public service careers.
