Below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions and some to-do list items as you make preparations to begin classes with us in August.

Transcripts: You are required to have an official transcript sent from your college or university indicating that you have received a bachelor’s degree. Please be advised that, regardless of when you graduated, the copy of your transcript that you sent to the LSAC is not acceptable to meet this requirement. If you are a recent graduate, please make sure that your degree has been conferred and is indicated on the transcript before having it sent to us. Your official final transcript must be received by the Office of Admissions by July 15, 2019 in order for the Registrar to register you for classes. You can use the UNC School of Law online status checker to see if we have received your final transcript—the transcript checkbox in ConnectCarolina will not update when your transcript is received and processed by our office.

Financial Aid: Please refer to the To-Do list, located on the Student Center page of your ConnectCarolina account, to ensure you have completed all necessary steps to retain your financial aid. Before the start of classes, you will receive several timely emails with important financial aid/billing information from Vanda Chou, our Director of Law School Financial Aid.

Immunization & Medical History Form: Every student entering the University of North Carolina is required to present documentation that he or she has received all of the immunizations required by law. The Immunization and Medical History form can be found on the ConnectCarolina home page, under the "More Student Links" tab at the top of the page. Please be sure to follow the instructions for completing the Immunization & Medical History Form, which is due before the first day of classes. If you have any questions about the immunization information, you may contact Campus Health Services. If you are a recent graduate of UNC, your immunization information should be up to date, but you should verify that with Campus Health. Please do not send any forms or records to the admissions office.

Health Insurance: All UNC students are required to have health insurance. You are therefore required to purchase the UNC system-wide health insurance plan or waive out of the university plan by providing proof of another credible health insurance plan. You can learn more about the mandatory health insurance hard waiver process and the UNC system-wide health insurance plan by visiting the Campus Health Services website. If you don't provide proof of other health insurance, you will be automatically billed for the UNC System Wide Health Insurance, but please note you must enroll in the plan to activate your insurance. It is recommended that you do so before August 1st.

ONYEN and UNC Email Account: Various departments around campus will soon begin sending emails to your UNC email account. If you haven’t already done so, please set up your email account and begin checking it. Admissions correspondence will continue going to the email address with which you applied. Please note that you cannot set up your UNC email account until you have created your ONYEN. Instructions for creating your ONYEN were emailed shortly after you were admitted.

Class Registration and the Placeholder Class: The Law School Registrar plans to register you for your classes in late July. Prior to this enrollment, you may be enrolled in a 15 credit hour placeholder course. This placeholder course simply allows the Cashier’s Office to bill you for a full-time course load. Once your actual classes are registered, you will receive an email from the Office of Admissions letting you know your class schedule has been finalized. Please do not buy your books until you receive this email—class schedules are subject to (and very likely to) change before your schedule is deemed finalized.

Parking: First-year law students are not eligible to register for on-campus parking through UNC Transportation & Parking. Students with significant family or commute-related hardship may be eligible for a permit through the UNC School of Law Hardship Parking Application process (most students will not qualify for a hardship parking permit, therefore please use discretion in choosing whether you should apply). All applications are due to Lakethia Jeffries by August 2019. Typically, first-year law students who are commuting from off campus will purchase a Commuter Alternative Program (CAP) permit. More information and the permit registration link can be found on the Transportation & Parking website. Please note you must wait until July 18th to purchase a CAP permit.

Financial Certificate Form (for International Students): All students who are not U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents must complete the Financial Certificate Form. Students not requesting F-1 or J-1 status need only complete Part I. International students requesting a Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 (for F-1 or J-1 status) must complete the full form and submit all required documentation (listed therein). Please submit the form and documentation as early as possible to allow adequate time for the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office to process the form and issue the requested documents. It is your responsibility to initiate this process.

Accessibility Resources & Service: All students seeking to identify as having a disability or medical condition that may impact his/her access to programs and activities of the University and which may require accommodating must complete appropriate documentation through UNC Accessibility Resources & Service. In order to be considered for accommodations, a student must initiate a registration process with Accessibility Resources & Service through the submission of the online Self Identification Form. For questions, contact (919) 962-8300, or email accessibility@unc.edu.

Carolina Law Ambassadors Welcome Events: Summer meet and greets are being planned by the CLA board. Invitations to join board members and your fellow classmates at happenings around Chapel Hill will be emailed 1-2 weeks in advance of the events. Questions about the events should be sent to the event organizer, which will be indicated in the invitation.

LEAP: A number of you have asked whether it is necessary to participate in law school prep programs being offered by Kaplan, BarBri and others. The UNC School of Law has a pre-orientation law school preparation program for our students known as LEAP. This program is free to incoming students of UNC. Information about the program, including registration information, has been sent to you via email. Please note the application deadline for LEAP, which runs August 22nd through August 24th, is July 6, 2018.

Orientation and First Day of Class: Orientation days are August 22nd-24th and attendance is mandatory for everyone. You will receive information in the coming weeks about the agenda for orientation. The first day of class is August 27th.
