On October 2, 2015 the Clinical Programs held an orientation and luncheon for our clinic volunteer interpreters and translators. Our volunteers, who are students or staff from across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus community, are fluent in Spanish. They assist our student advocates with interviews of clients and witnesses as well as the translation of documents into Spanish.
At the event, clinic staff members, Susy Espinoza and Katie Bucrek (both of whom are fluent in Spanish), reviewed interpreter and translator best practice procedures and guidelines with the clinic volunteers. The staff also discussed interpreter dilemmas that could arise in their work with clinic clients and provided possible strategies for meaningful resolutions. The volunteers asked questions and were able to exchange ideas with other volunteers.
The Clinical Programs depends upon and greatly appreciates our volunteer interpreters' time and energy in assisting Spanish-speaking clinic clients with their legal matters.
