Clinic student Haley Phillips, with assistance from her clinic student partner Brian Kettmer, recently negotiated a settlement in a long-term school suspension case. The client had been suspended in October for the remainder of the school year, and denied alternative education services, as a result of a short fistfight in which no one was injured. As a result of Haley’s extensive research and negotiation, the school district agreed to permit the student to enroll in the local alternative school in January. Jennifer Story, UNC Law '11, who is an attorney at North Carolina Legal Aid's Advocates for Children’s Services, referred and consulted on the case with the Youth Justice Clinic.
