Westlaw Printer Update

Effective June 2013, Westlaw will no longer provide printer service to law schools. Westlaw has cited two primary factors in their decision to discontinue the law school printer program: 1) a significant decrease in the use of printers after the release of WestlawNext and 2) the substantial environmental impact of the program.

As a result of this new policy, the faculty and student Westlaw printers will be removed at the end of the semester. In the absence of the printers, both WestlawNext and Westlaw Classic provide a number of alternative document delivery options, including:

WestlawNext

  • Folders
    • WestlawNext allows users to create and organize folders by topic or issue. You can then highlight and annotate documents and store them in your folders.
    • Instructions:
      • Click the New Folder icon
      • Create a name for your folder and click OK
      • Select the document(s) that you want to save to your folder
      • Click the Save to Folder icon
      • Select the relevant folder and click Save
  • Download
    • The Download feature of WestlawNext allows you to save documents to your computer. After downloading the documents, faculty (5th floor faculty printers) and students (law school or CCI printers) can print them on an available printer.
    • Instructions:
      • Select the document(s) that you want to download
      • Click the Delivery icon
      • Select Download from the drop-down menu
      • Click Download
  • Email
    • You can save WestlawNext documents as email attachments. Once you have emailed the documents to yourself, you can print them at home or any other location where you have access to email and a printer.
    • Instructions:
      • Select the document(s) that you want to attach to your email
      • Click the Delivery icon
      • Select Email from the drop-down menu
      • Enter your email address and click Email
  • Kindle
    • WestlawNext supports the delivery of documents to your Kindle.
    • Instructions:
      • Add westlawnext@westlawnext.com to the "Approved E-mail List" on your Kindle
      • Select the document(s) that you want to send to your Kindle
      • Click the Delivery icon
      • Select Kindle from the drop-down menu
      • Enter your Kindle email address
      • Click the Layout and Limits tab to make changes to the format of your document(s)
      • Click Send

Westlaw Classic

  • Download
    • Westlaw Classic users can download and save documents to their computer and then print them on an available printer (5th floor faculty printer for faculty members; CCI or law school printers for students).
    • Instructions:
      • Open the document that you want to download
      • Click the Download icon
      • Select the format of your document
      • Click Save
  • Email
    • You also have the option of saving Westlaw Classic documents as email attachments. After sending the email to yourself, you can print the documents at home or any other location where you have access to email and a printer.
    • Instructions:
      • Open the document that you want to attach to your email
      • Click the Email icon
      • Enter your email address and click Send
