Catalonia's independence movement creates uncertainty in E.U.

It seems likely -- but isn't fully certain -- that an independent Catalonia would remain in the European Union. Although several secession movements have gathered momentum in recent years, the EU still has not developed an effective policy for dealing with an actual secession.
