A 1L's Reflections about the Spring Break Expunction Trip to Canton, NC

The Pro Bono Program has been a driving influence for me in deciding to attend UNC School of Law, but at first it was difficult for me to find a balance between the rigorous course load that comes with being a law student and finding time to volunteer for various pro bono projects. When I learned that Carolina sponsors alternative break trips that provide opportunities for students to participate in legal clinics that help the community, I knew I wanted to be involved.

To expunge is a verb? Reflections on the Spring Break Pro Bono Trip From a 1L

When I told family and friends that I was going on an “expunction clinic trip,” the majority of them replied with “a what?” and rightfully so- expunctions are not a well-known legal resource. The idea of wiping someone’s criminal record is not a sexy, headline making endeavor. And yet, the committed attorneys from NC Legal Aid have devoted substantial resources and manpower to broaden access to this critically important opportunity.

Reflections on the Spring Break Expunction Trip to Canton from a 3L

Pro Bono has always been such a big part of my experience here at UNC Law, and the some of the most remarkable times I have had during my entire law school career have been the trips. With the Pro Bono Program, I have had the opportunity to travel all over North Carolina: Fayetteville, Cherokee, Asheville, Wilmington, and finally, to Canton for this expunction trip, which was my third expunction trip overall.

Wills Clinic: The Last Day and Giving Thanks

It is our third day here in Western North Carolina, and our last day of the Wills Clinic. Over the past three days, we helped to meet legal unmet legal needs in three different towns and have drafted 143 documents. This achievement would not have been possible if Legal Aid of North Carolina at Morganton had not taken a chance on us.

If There's A Will, There's A Way

Day 2 of the UNC Pro Bono Wills Trip is taking place in Avery County Senior Center today. We left our hotel in Boone, NC at 8:15 this morning to arrive at 9:00 sharp knowing we had several appointments at 9:30. Upon our arrival, clients were already anxiously waiting for us in the main lobby of this quaint senior center. Several clients already knew that the UNC law school hosts a wills clinic each year in Western, North Carolina and were very excited to participate this year.

A Will To Do Pro Bono

Bright eyed and bushy-tailed, our adventure began at 7:15 a.m. this morning as 14 law students pulled out of Chapel Hill and journeyed to Boone, NC. We safely arrived at Western Watauga Senior Center to wrap up our training with Legal Aid of N.C. and to get our Wills clinics started.

We helped a handful of clients today but are expecting three times as many tomorrow. Many law students came without any expectations but in just one day, with the help of our peers and Legal Aid attorneys, we have already been very successful in writing wills for the elderly of Boone, NC.
