The Pro Bono Program has been a driving
influence for me in deciding to attend UNC School of Law, but at first it was
difficult for me to find a balance between the rigorous course load that comes
with being a law student and finding time to volunteer for various pro bono
projects. When I learned that Carolina sponsors alternative break trips that
provide opportunities for students to participate in legal clinics that help
the community, I knew I wanted to be involved.

Day 2 of the UNC Pro Bono Wills Trip is taking place in Avery County Senior Center today. We left our hotel in Boone, NC at 8:15 this morning to arrive at 9:00 sharp knowing we had several appointments at 9:30. Upon our arrival, clients were already anxiously waiting for us in the main lobby of this quaint senior center. Several clients already knew that the UNC law school hosts a wills clinic each year in Western, North Carolina and were very excited to participate this year.

Bright eyed and bushy-tailed, our adventure began at 7:15 a.m. this morning as 14 law students pulled out of Chapel Hill and journeyed to Boone, NC. We safely arrived at Western Watauga Senior Center to wrap up our training with Legal Aid of N.C. and to get our Wills clinics started.
We helped a handful of clients today but are expecting three times as many tomorrow. Many law students came without any expectations but in just one day, with the help of our peers and Legal Aid attorneys, we have already been very successful in writing wills for the elderly of Boone, NC.
